11/20/19– Worship

Do you have a hair stylist you can totally trust, who knows exactly what you want, and you can just take a nap in the chair while she does what she does perfectly?

How about a financial advisor who trades on your behalf? A car mechanic who doesn’t need to call you and give you the price, you just know he’ll get it done right. A babysitter you leave in charge of your kids until midnight.

It is so nice to have people we trust. We know they’ll do the job well, do it right, and not defraud us in any way. You can trust God to do his job even better than that.

“The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does” (Psalm 145:13).

He always gets it right. He does it well. He never defrauds you. His work works everything for your good all the time.

Except, one problem, there are some things in your life right now that are God’s job and you’re trying to do them. I’m sorry but you’re not as good at them as God is. Not even close.

Sometimes in mercy he’ll yank them away from you and fire you for your own good. Sometimes in mercy he will let you fumble around, maybe fail, and finally figure it out.

Oh, and there’s another problem. There are other things in your life that are your job, and you’re asking God to do them. Sometimes in mercy he will do them, sometimes your way, sometimes his way. Sometimes in mercy he will not do them, and remind you—if you’re paying attention—that this is your job not his.

Okay, so how do you know the difference? How do you know what is God’s job and what is your job? Two things.

The Word of God guides you. See it in today’s verse? “All he promises.” Get to know His promises better by studying the Bible. I guarantee that your list of tasks will decrease when you grow to understand how much God can do.

Secondly, the worship of God guides you. Awe of God, joy in all he does, and wanting to serve and glorify him is going to help you give him what is his, and take gladly what is yours.

PRAYER: Dear God, you are so good at what you do! I need to let you do more of it. God, you also make me good at what I do. I need to do more of it. Bless your Word in my life, and my worship of you, to help me know what is your job and what is mine. Amen.

FURTHER MEDITATION: Read Psalm 145. Take some notes. Where do you see the words of God as guidance for what is his job or yours? Where do you see the worship of God as guidance for what is his job or yours?
