Shelter

Pastor Daron CrossLife Blog

America is submitting to the threat of COVID-19 by issuing shelter-in-place orders across the land. We are losing treasured freedoms, missing expected opportunities, and upsetting patterns of income, education and business.

These changes are going to create a deeper sense of “what if?” and “what now?” You may be suffering from some symptoms of grief because you have experienced significant loss of some kind. Fear wants to rule the hour.

God has much to say about this! He gets your attention through the words of Psalm 91:1-6. His own shelter-in-place order, drawing you into himself. His safety. His strength. His care.

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” No matter what is happening around you or in you, God is your shelter. He is the ultimate shelter—the most, the highest, the best. He is Almighty. Nothing else is that strong. It all submits to him.

“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” Even during great threats, there is a perfectly safe place. And it is all yours like having a club membership. You can say, “I have a perfectly safe place. My God.”

“Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.” The threats are real. God knows what is attacking you, causing anxiety or irritability, confusing you or tempting you. He knows it so well, he saves you from it like a mother eagle knows her little ones and what they need.

“His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” You hold a shield for protection. And a rampart holds you inside its massive walls for protection. Both of these show the Lord’s faithfulness. He’s not going anywhere. He’s here. He’s with you. He’s open for business.

“You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” Whatever keeps you awake at night. Whatever comes flying into your mind each day. Whatever virus stalks and even destroys. God’s faithfulness in his promises does not change. These threats don’t move him out of the way or find him unprepared.

So stay in God by trusting him as your shelter. Pray for rest, for calm confidence, and for peace that no threat can take from you.

PRAYER: Dear God, you are the best shelter, promising protection and giving me peace. Defend me against all danger of body and soul. Keep me safe in your care, full of faith and peace. Watch over those most vulnerable. You are faithful. Amen.

FURTHER MEDITATION: This psalm identifies different kinds of threats. Meditate this morning on what it is that threatens your faith and peace? What makes you feel most unsafe most often? In prayer, thank God for being stronger than that. Give it to him and let him handle it today.
