A Bunch of Lies

Pastor DaronCrossLife Blog

Did you know that there’s a shortage of foam in our world right now? We’ve had a hard time ordering cushioned chairs for the worship center in our new building. Supply levels are very low or non existent. Church chair companies are going out of business.

I suggested that people wouldn’t mind sitting on the floor, or standing for the entire service, or some good, old-fashioned, hard-as-oak church pews—but our amazing staff pulled through and found some comfy, padded, full-of-foam church chairs.

A lack of supply makes a person ask questions they wouldn’t have otherwise asked. Like, “Could we sit on the floor in church?” The devil knows this when it comes to temptation.

The devil loves to convince us that situations are much worse than they really are. He loves to lie to us that the supply is too low.

Low supply of friends or family who truly understand us. Low supply of having what it takes to get the job done. Low supply of patience with problems and people and projects you didn’t ask for.

The devil uses lies to convince us of a lack of supply, and create a heightened desire or demand. So we think, “I’m really desperate!” or “This is an emergency!”

And the next step is dangerous and deadly. The Bible says, “Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (James 1:15). Any sin, especially if it becomes rationalized in your mind or no longer resisted, can push away not only God’s moral will but his forgiving love.

Sin kills careers, it kills faith, it kills families and friendships, it kills mental and physical health, it kills spiritual life. It can destroy a person forever.

The remedy is to resist the devil’s lies and turn to God’s truth.“He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created” (James 1:18).

The devil wants to kill you. Forever. But God gives you life. Gives you birth (not just physical but spiritual birth into faith). God’s truth powerfully works in his Word and through Baptism to create this spiritual life, saving you from the lies of the devil. Don’t believe them!

There is no lack of supply in your life because God’s truth promises you are his creation. And not just any creature but “a kind of firstfruits.” The first and best.

PRAYER: Dear God, protect me from the devil’s lies by saving me with your truth. Call my faith to believe more in your promises, and resist the temptation to sin. I have life in you, and lack nothing. Amen.

FURTHER MEDITATION: Read James 1:13-18. How did these true teachings about temptation, lies, sin and truth apply in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve first sinned (Genesis 3)?
