Love is blooming in Pratt, Kansas. Even after 50 years.
On August 10, Lee and Renee Wilson will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They’ve been together almost their whole lives.
“We met in high school. She couldn’t date until she was 16, and I called her on her 16th birthday and that’s when we started dating,” Lee said. “Our first date was an FFA roller skating party in Harper, Kansas.”
Now what’s a guy to get his bride after 50 years of marriage? How about more flowers than any lucky gal has ever received at one time? As in, 80 acres of flowers! Sunflowers.
By the way, that’s roughly 1.2 million sunflowers, guys, hint hint.
Lee planted them back in May, because Renee has always liked sunflowers and he wanted to commemorate their anniversary in an extra special way.
Now, as the sunflowers are reaching full bloom for their anniversary, Renee can look out the window and see evidence of her husband’s love as far as her eyes can see. She can smile and emotionally inhale more “I love you’s” than she could ever count in a day (1.2 million).
That’s the same gift that God has given you. Maybe it’s been 5 or 25 or 50 or more years since you and God got together. Even though Lee Wilson says he can’t perform such a feat again next year, God gives you flowers every year—every day—as far as you can possibly see and beyond.
Emotionally and spiritually inhale all of God’s “I love you’s” as his gifts to remind you that he’s glad you’re together, in love with each other. He wants to wow you, if you care to notice.
When convincing his followers about the love of God, Jesus suggests, “See how the flowers of the field grow” (Matthew 6:28).
Stop and smell the roses today, or see the golden field of sunflowers—as in all the blessings God designs for you.
How many droplets of water caressed the back of your neck in the shower this morning?
How many fibers of cotton are woven into the shirt you are wearing?
How many pixels are shaping this blog right here on the screen you’re using?
Jesus says that God is involved even when it comes to the hairs on your head. Get the idea? God wants you to never run out of reasons to see how much he loves you, and that his love is always bigger and brighter than your ability to observe or deserve.
You just need to look out the window and take it all in, if you can.
PRAYER: Dear God, like a field of sunflowers stretching across the horizon, you love me farther than I can ask, imagine or see. I pray that today I’m more aware how boundless and beautiful your love really is. And then, I can bloom too, showing that beauty to others. Amen.
