Abilities are natural talents you’re born with, skills that God gives so that you can always do what God wants you to do.
When Moses was leading the Israelites on their 40-year journey to the promised land, God designed a deluxe tent structure for their worship called the tabernacle. He told Moses, “I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you” (Exodus 31:6).
God gave the command to build the tabernacle, and the skills to the workers to keep his command.
Have you ever started a project and you couldn’t continue because you didn’t have the right tool? Isn’t that frustrating? You never lack any abilities you need to do what God wants you to do.
Have you ever completed a project and it just didn’t turn out like you’d hoped? Your work always shines when you use your abilities from God for his glory.
Have you ever appreciated developing a skill and using it in a new and improved way? Moses couldn’t rescue the Israelites from Egypt when he was 40 years old. That’s when he impulsively killed an Egyptian and God had to extract him out of Egypt. Then, from a burning bush, God called him at age 80 to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, and for 40 years he led them through the desert to the promised land.
It wasn’t until he was 120 years old that Moses delivered God’s people to the promised land. God worked on him for a long time, and it paid off. And God is sharpening your abilities, too!
So don’t just be aware of your abilities. Be even more aware of God. “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
God fills you with the Holy Spirit and skills you to do everything he wants you to do. Do it for him, and you will always shine!
PRAYER: Dear God, thank you for my abilities, and by your grace giving me everything I need to do everything you ask. I pray that my work may shine so that others see you and praise your name. Amen.
FURTHER MEDITATION: What are you good at? What is a skill you have that most others don’t? Ask for God’s guidance. Think and pray about this, and then explore your abilities by using them to serve God and others.
