Bla. Bla. Bla. And This.

Pastor DaronCrossLife Blog

Do you know those overhead highway signs that can change messages? Normally they’ll tell you how many minutes or miles to downtown, or traffic alerts.

The New Jersey Department of Transportations wanted to do more than that. So they came up with some creative and kinda hilarious messages to get drivers’ attention—and interest in safety.

“Hocus pocus drive with focus” and “Nice car. Did it come with a turn signal?” along with some other Jersey-sassy messages, were definitely getting attention.

But the feds dropped by the state of New Jersey and shut it down. They heard reports of too many drivers pulling out their phone to take pictures of the clever messages.

I think the church could improve in the area of communication that gets people’s attention. That’s why I write blogs that connect with life. And craft titles for my sermons that often times break the rules I learned in preaching class 30 years ago. That’s why I love videos and at CrossLife we recently posted a movie trailer on Facebook inviting guys to man up, love Jesus, and join the men’s group.

How can church better get peoples’ attention, while communicating the timeless truths of the Bible? We also serve snacks at our LifeGroups and coffee on Sunday morning. It’s amazing how a 250-pound man feels less threatened talking to church people if he’s holding a 10 ounce cup of coffee. Success!

This is one of the reasons Jesus preached in parables and God showed up in clouds or fire. God’s story of salvation is anything but boring, and if you pay close attention you’ll hear sarcasm and humor from God himself.

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand” (Job 38:4).

So enjoy a creative meme about Christianity. Buy a T-shirt that says Binge Jesus. And share the inspirational video from church.

People will pay attention. Maybe even take a screen shot, stay for some conversation, or share a blog with a friend (hint, hint).

PRAYER: God, thank you for not being boring. If my church is boring, help us to better communicate your truths. If my church isn’t boring, help us to keep you and your truths the main thing. Inspire Christians with creativity and joy that reflects yours. Amen.

EVANGELISM ACTION: Do you know anyone who thinks church is boring? Find communication media that preaches and teaches God’s truth in a creative way, and then drip it to them once in a while. Start here.
