Can Drones Really Deliver?

If you’re anywhere near College Station, TX you might see something strange flying through your neighborhood. Your Amazon package.

By the end of 2022, Amazon will begin using a new drone to deliver some packages in College Station, one of the places to first see drone delivery. The MK27-2 drone is about five feet wide and can fly up to 50mph. It will hover over the front yards of homes receiving packages and drop them from 12 feet in the air.

Although Amazon received Federal Aviation Administration approval in 2020, there’s still plenty of skepticism.

Does anyone really want their new air fryer dropped from 12 feet high? Or dropped onto the heads of kids playing in the front yard? And what about all those wires on telephone poles that aren’t too friendly to low-flying drones?

Um, not to mention gun-toting Texans taking a shot or two at the drone to steal your air fryer.

Amazon has offered assurance that if your dog or kids are in the front yard, the drone’s heat signature sensor will alert the hovering drone not to deliver the package. We will soon see.

Until then, the uncertainty of Amazon drones reminds me of a much more certain delivery of a much more precious package.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

The Bible is talking about Jesus, delivered to us as a gift from heaven. Not just dropped out of the air, maybe to survive, maybe to be blown away. Jesus came down all the way to be born and live “among us.”

As Christmas decorations go up and Christmas shopping explodes, keep this Bible verse handy. Bring up the topic of drone delivery in your conversations with friends who need Jesus. Ask what they think about Amazon, and what they think about Christmas—the most certain delivery our world has ever seen.

PRAYER: Jesus, you came to our world. Thank you for joining us. And for taking on yourself our sins, mistakes, bad habits and hurts. They’re all real, just as you are real. May your delivery and divine presence fill my heart with joy today, and give me a reason to tell others. Amen.

EVANGELISM ACTION: Bring up the topic of drone delivery in your conversations with friends who need Jesus. Ask what they think about Amazon, and what they think about Christmas—the most certain delivery our world has ever seen.
