God Rocks

Solid as a rock. That’s what we say. Rocks represent what is unmoveable.

Steadfastness. Faithfulness. Always there. Build on the rock. Stand on the rock. Strength. Endurance.

A fighter from the 70’s named Rocky. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a well built professional wrestler turned actor and producer. The disciple Peter given a similar name by Jesus, “the Rock” (John 1:42).

Our God is not sand that washes away depending on erosion and environment. When troubles come, enemies strike, or sins weigh us down, our God doesn’t slide out of the scene and leave us alone. He stays. He is strength. Always there.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:1,2).

If Rocky or The Rock or the disciple Peter stand next to you, put their arm around you, and say, “You’re safe with me. I’m here. It’ll be okay,” I think your fear would dial down a few levels, if not completely.

These mortals are standing, however, on a bigger boulder, a stronger Rock who is God. Even when all other rocks, boulders, continents, securities, hopes and strongholds crumble around you—and they will—may your prayer be, “I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2).

Jesus Christ was crucified on a rocky outcropping called Golgotha (John 19). Heaven is compared to a mountaintop experience (Isaiah 25). Joshua led Israel to set up twelve stones when they crossed into the Promised Land (Joshua 12).

PRAYER: God, you are the Rock! Mightier than all mountains, you will not be moved and you will not crumble, even if mountains are uprooted or topple down. I want to build on you, stand on you, and find my strength in you. Remind me. Help me remember. You rock! Amen.

FURTHER MEDITATION: What memorials have you set up in your life to remind you of the significance of God, your Rock? What rituals or disciplines, art or playlist, studies or reading plans? Let them help you remember, give thanks, and renew your trust day by day in the Rock who made and rules all other rocks.
