Is God Hands On

“Stop touching the TV! Leave your sister alone! No, no, no; get your fingers off the remote!”

How many times in a child’s life do they hear their parent or teacher say, “Hands off!” Kids just need to touch everything!

The frog on the driveway that was run over. The already-been-chewed piece of gum on the floor at Target. A hot stove. The chocolate chip cookie sitting on the kitchen counter. The grungy floor in a public restroom.

God is like that. He wants his fingers in everything, including all your stuff. Your job. Your home. Your mind. Your plans. Your saving and spending habits. Your screen time. Your children. All of it. He touches everything.

“Hands on, God!” Is that what you say? Or do you tell God, “Keep your fingers off my stuff,” afraid he’ll mess it up like a toddler touching all the wrong things on your phone screen?

God’s fingers handle miraculous encounters in our lives that defy explanation, like the miracles Moses performed in front of Pharaoh to convince him that he was picking a fight with God. Pharaoh’s magicians cried, “This is the finger of God” (Exodus 8:19).

God’s fingers etched timeless truths for all humanity in the Ten Commandments, when he handed to Moses “the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God” (Exodus 31:18).

Jesus, the Son of God, practiced this “hands on” approach, using his divine strength and partnering with God the Father to perform miracles. “If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Luke 11:20).

Those fingers of Jesus would heal many more people, would fold together in prayer for you and all believers, would drip with blood while dying for you on the cross, would rise to life and offer proof to his disciples that he was alive, and would raise in a promise and command for believers to make disciples.

What do you need your Savior God to touch in your life? Ask him to be “hands on.”

PRAYER: Jesus, you are my “hands on” God, touching things and people and my life with the fingers of your love and power. I love how you handle me, and our world. Hold me close. Extend your hands to others through mine. Amen.
