Just Imagine God

Some of our best creativity comes from our imagination. 

Thinking outside the box. Following dreams that call us to sail from safe harbors to unexplored territories. Designing our own imaginary childhood friends. These all stretch us beyond limits imposed by our environment, or even our own minds and hearts. 

Imagination, however, can betray us. As flawed human beings, self-delusion misguides us all. The Bible warns often against people “who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations” (Isaiah 65:2, see also Psalm 73:7 and Ezekiel 13:2).

A child can imagine a terrible monster hiding in the closet, and that’s not good. But it’s just their imagination. It’s not real. 

Imagination is powerfully creative, and our flawed minds can follow it to bad places. 

Yet when harnessed to our faith, our imagination is just as powerful, just as creative, just as expressive and freeing. And the best part: when we use our faith to imagine the things of God, these are real.

You have probably imagined heaven. You have probably imagined what it would be like for God to answer your prayer a certain way. But there’s so much more. 

Imagine what the Holy Spirit could do with the gifts he’s given you. Imagine the divine options God has to calm your fears of “what if” (a good way to address these fears is to replace “what if I …” and “what if it …” with “what if God …”). Imagine the limitless, reckless love Jesus enjoys giving you freely from his heart of mercy. Imagine people walking up to you in heaven saying, “Thank you for telling me about Jesus.”

Use that power of imagination today, by faith. Instead of imagining things that aren’t real, imagine things that are. 

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3:20,21).

PRAYER: I want to imagine more of you and your wonderful works, God. To explore, to creatively dream, and to wander recklessly by faith to discover you, your work in my life, and your amazing blessings. Fill my mind and soul to imagine what is real! Amen. 

EVANGELISM ACTION: Ask a friend who needs Jesus what they daydream about. Bring up in conversation that you daydream about real things as you imagine God.
