Two Texas ranchers wanted to impress each other with the names of their ranch. One of them created a name so long that none of his cattle survived the branding. Making a name for ourselves is dangerous business, but God comes with a saving solution.

Notes And Next Steps

Genesis 11:1-9 + Part 6 of the series “Genesis: In The Beginning"

“Why move on? It doesn’t get any better than this! We could really be happy here without God.”

Where have you believed the lie that you can be happy without God?

Take some time to reflect on not only the joys and successes but the failures and frustrations, too.

The Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building … “Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” (Genesis 11:5,7)

“You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). (Matthew 1:21-23)

Unless the Lord builds the house … (Psalm 127:1)

        1. Meet with your family. Have some creative fun coming up with new names for common household items that put the focus on God. Like, instead of a refrigerator, call it “storehouse of God’s cool gifts.” How many can you come up with?
        2. Reflect this week on the two questions in today’s message: Where do you believe the lie about being happy without God? And, what are some frustrations? Pray about it.
        3. Search for your favorite Christian music that includes the lyrics “in the name of the Lord.” Dig up a new song or two and spend time with them this week.
