More Than Simple

Only fools are satisfied with their level of understanding, and are okay with themselves going on living without a deep desire to know God better.

Complacency

According to Proverbs 1:32, “The complacency of fools will destroy them.”

Complacency means being entirely satisfied with where I am, even if it isn’t where I should be. It is the path of least resistance, the easy thing to do, or what brings the most immediate pleasure.

Complacency is the smoker who has had a heart attack saying, “I know I should quit,” but not doing anything about it. Complacency is the “A” student being satisfied with “Bs.” Complacency is a Christian accepting their level of wisdom and understanding with no concern for spiritual growth.

According to God it makes a person a fool and, if continued, will cause the destruction of body and soul. Speaking as if a person, God’s wisdom calls out, “How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. But … since you ignored all my advice … I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you” (Proverbs 1:22-26).

Christians cannot safely say, “I was baptized and confirmed and know enough about the Bible to be saved.” Christians cannot repeatedly skip Bible study and worship and personal devotions in the home without the devil coming closer to catch his unwary prey.

God forgive us for our foolish complacency, especially in our Christian homes and churches.

Wise and wiser

By faith in God you are wise, and by carefully understanding what the Lord’s will is, you become wiser still. You will make more of the opportunities in your life as you relate each one to the Lord’s will, which you can understand. How? By checking it out in the Bible.

It’s like checking the weather forecast and, based on that, arranging your clothes and maybe even your schedule for the day. The forecast doesn’t make the decision for you, but based on its probable accuracy you make decisions that help you make more of the day.

Likewise, you can check God’s will in the Bible; God doesn’t make the decision for you, but based on his perfect accuracy and always-fulfilled promises your faith-filled wisdom can make more of each day.

God’s wisdom has already found you. You are wise. That wisdom leads you to better find and understand God’s will in the Bible.

PRAYER: God of all wisdom, I need your wise words and ways to guide me. When I become enamored with my opinions, when I settle into complacency that I know enough, have patient mercy on me. Teach me your holy truth so that I grow into your better version of me. Amen.

FURTHER MEDITATION: Read Proverbs 1 and 2 for a boost of wisdom.
