I showed a group of kids a colorful plastic bottle a bit thinner and taller than a soda can. It pictured a few happy kiddos on the front label, holding little plastic wands and blowing soapy bubbles.
I asked the kids, “What’s in this bottle?” And guess what they replied (actually shouted while jumping up and down).
“Bubbles!”
Nope. I disappointed them. There are no bubbles in here. Just a bunch of liquid. If I open the lid and turn the bottle on its side, will bubbles come out? No. But can I use this liquid to make bubbles? Should I? Can someone help me? (More jumping and giddiness and even a squeal of anticipation).
Before we do that, I want to show you where the Bible says that we blow bubbles. It says that when we love God, then we open our lips to praise God, and when we do, other people appreciate God and they say, “Oooh” or “Aaaaah” or “Wowww.”
“Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise” (Psalm 51:15).
So, use your lips, your mouth, to praise the Lord, to say good things about God, to tell your friends about Jesus, to sing about God. It will make other people jump up and down with delight. Or, perhaps, just quietly appreciate how much God means to you. And to them.
PRAYER: Open my lips, Lord, to praise you, to pray to you, and to proclaim you to others. Like blowing bubbles, it will attract their attention and even their delight. Like you have attracted me. Amen.
FURTHER MEDITATION: Say a prayer today that talks with God about opportunities he gives to you when you can tell others about him, and invite them to church.
- Praise (tell God what you appreciate about others who have taught you the gospel)
- Repent (tell God about your sins of remaining silent and not witnessing, missing opportunities, and trust in his promises of forgiveness)
- Ask God to open your eyes to see the opportunities he orchestrates for you to open your lips and blow bubbles so that others see him.
- Yield (talk to God about the next step after you say “Amen,” how you want faith to lead the way, how you are willing to be part of his answer and see it develop for your good)
