They Fought for Us

Would you feel shocked to discover that a general in Operation Enduring Freedom struggled with depression? That a sniper in Afghanistan grew up with an abusive dad and a fear of authority? That an admiral directing Navy operations in the Vietnam War suffered with the shame of losing his wife because he had an affair? That an Air Force officer had a gambling addiction?

We’re all flawed, even the greatest of veterans who have fought for our freedom.

But therein lies a key component of victory. Fighting for something (or someone) bigger than yourself. Bigger than your depression or addiction. Bigger than your shame or fear. Not just to survive yourself, but to make a difference for others.

The Bible tells stories of some mighty warriors who joined King David’s personal army. Bodyguards. Swordsmen. Military strategists. Spies. You might be surprised at the backgrounds and beginnings of many of these men.

“All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around [David], and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him” (1 Samuel 22:2).

They saw in David what they soon pursued as a group. A cause bigger and higher than David. God’s cause. God’s kingdom and will and glory. If you need more explanation about David’s passion for God, just read the psalms he wrote.

As we thank God today for our veterans who have served well, we also thank God for his grace and purpose in their lives. They need that spiritual freedom as much as we need social and political freedom.

And as we enjoy our freedoms won by the men and women who have sacrificed personal pleasure and gain for the bigger cause of a nation, and even world, let’s pray for a faith and passion like that.

PRAYER: Dear God, thank you for the mighty warriors who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. Speak your grace and peace into any personal struggles, or family challenges, resulting from their duties. Inspire us all by their passion for a greater cause, to pursue your will, your kingdom, and your glory above all. Amen.

EVANGELISM ACTION: Share this with a veteran whom you know, and ask what you can pray about for them.
