Here’s how the Bible describes Jesus. It’s a prophecy through Isaiah, where God the Father promises that God the Holy Spirit will bless God the Son to save us.
“The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—and he will delight in the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:2,3).
“The Spirit of the Lord” rested on Jesus at his baptism when the Holy Spirit descended from heaven and landed on him to reveal clearly that he is God’s son, even as baptism promises that we are God’s children.
Jesus showed “wisdom” applying the timeless truths of Scripture in a timely way in his Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus saw failed people, grieving people, helpless people with “understanding” that their story is real, and he’d help.
Jesus taught with perfect “counsel,” giving holy directions for life like, “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Luke 18:25).
Jesus displayed “might” when he commanded storms and demons to leave, and he rose from the dead.
His “knowledge and fear of the Lord” wasn’t just book knowledge but a relationship of knowing his Father’s love, submitting to his Father’s will, and using the Spirit’s Word. For example, when Jesus was being tempted for 40 days and he resisted the devil by these words of Scripture, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only’” (Matthew 4:10, Deuteronomy 6:13).
These verses are a promise of God the Father that God the Holy Spirit will equip God the Son as the only true Savior. So this teaches about the Triune God—yes, in the Old Testament.
PRAYER: Dear Father, Son and Holy Spirit, your work of salvation is a gift. Jesus, with wisdom, understanding, power and the fear of the Lord you have saved me! Teach me to appreciate you, love you, and obey you more today. Amen.
FURTHER MEDITATION: Look back through these descriptions of Jesus. I gave some biblical examples. Think of a few instances in your faith and life when Jesus demonstrated any of these traits.
